The Yukon Blues by Igor D’India

16 thousand kilometres hitchhiking and 1,400 km in canoe, across Canada, Alaska, and along the path of the wild Yukon river. Inspired by Walter Bonatti, Yukon Blues, produced by Kobalt Entertainment, is the solitary adventure of the filmmaker from Palermo Igor D’India, four months “into the wild” with just a map and a compass. Igor started out hitchhiking from Toronto (Canada) and reached Whitehorse from where he then canoed on his own down the waters of the Yukon river for 1,400 kilometres. The only logo of his expedition without a sponsor: that of the non-profit organisation “Sport senza frontiere” which helps disadvantaged children. From Whitehorse he navigates along the course of the river, through Dawson City, entering Alaska at Eagle and then reaching Fort Yukon, the most northern point of the Arctic Circle. Here the adverse weather conditions force him to abandon his canoe and complete the expedition with the means fortune brings him. And to finish it all off, to return to base in Toronto, he rattles out another 9 thousand kilometres of hitchhiking, immerging himself in a world of picturesque, crazy characters.

Acqua concert by the Orchestra of Via Padova

The CD is a concept album inspired by the problem of planetary nutrition, the main theme of Expo 2015. Eleven original pieces composed by different composers, each one bringing their respective culture of origin, unique music training and, obviously, their own style. The concert takes shape as a trip around the world through cultures and music genres, from funky to blues, Eastern European dances to Latin rhythms, up to Italian singer song-writing. This is all under the common denominator of jazz, the developing ground of almost all of the orchestras. While Aziz Riahi performs traditional muezzin singing, Asi es Chincha di Juan Carlos Vega (singer) and Alfredo Munoz eYamil Castillo Otero (drums) proposes South America rhythms and melodies played on a kind of personal mythology. Then the atmosphere mellows thanks to the sound of the balafon, a traditional African instrument, of Abdullay Traorè, while the violins appear in a lullaby which acts as a prelude to Dugukolo, a piece which expresses the desire to thank and respect Mother Earth. Gianluigi Carlone, an extremely special guest, performs in Il Banchetto degli Ingordi, which puts the spotlight on the avidity of the powerful in an explicit reference to the Expo. “The upside-down tree envelops the meaning of this new work, a tree to continue to nourish through its vital sap, water, an element of life, culture, and exchange, with the knowledge that all of our acts have an impact, for better or worse, on the entire ecosystem”.

The Orchestra of Via Padova, colours and sounds from all over the world, nineteen musicians from nine different countries. Set up in 2006 from the union of professional musicians with different artistic experience and sensibilities, it immediately became a laboratory of exchange and experimentation: indeed, every member put themselves on the line to create a common language based on the exchange. The physical meeting place really was Via Padova, the most multi-ethnic street in Milan.

A paid event.

The liquid stage – Stories of men and water

In collaboration with Earth Viaggi and Parallelozero.

A trip around the world in 38 shots on the search of the ancient link between man and water. Water becomes a liquid stage, with comedy and drama of humanity taking to the stage in infinite shows, always the same and always different. More than a war, among those which cursed the last century, people fought for water, and others will fight for it: when he is thirsty, even the most mild-mannered man is prepared to take up a rifle in order to quench it. Water, either fresh or salt water, current or stagnant, pure or poisoned, contained in a swimming pool, a holy water font, or in the bed of a river, water that supports the keel of a fishing boat and that which has turned into a layer of ice during a long northern winter, is the ironworks where children work to dismantle old ships and the washbasin where you wash to perpetuate an old ritual dating back two thousand years.

The photos are by Francesco Alesi, Luigi Baldelli, Simone Cerio, Alessandro Gandolfi, Sergio Ramazzotti, Davide Scagliola, and Bruno Zanzottera. The exhibition was created by Parallelozero.

Confrontier

In 1989, Kai Wiedenhöfer took photos of the fall of the Berlin Wall from his house: a historic event which left a deep mark on him. At that time, like many others, Wiedenhöfer believed that the fall of the wall would have marked the end of walls as political tools and abandoning them as an anachronistic dividing tool. Twenty years later, history proved them wrong, indeed walls have enjoyed a barbaric rebirth. Frontier barriers have been erected in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East following political, economic, religious, and ethical conflicts. Wiedenhöfer took photographs of walls in Ceuta and Melilla, Baghdad, in the occupied territories of Palestine, at the United States – Mexico border, in Cyprus and Korea, in addition to the remains of the Iron Curtain. His project aims to show that walls are not a solution for the political and economic problems we have today, but instead are proof of our stupidity, our inability to communicate with each other. Les Cultures have always been working on the idea that borders, rigid barriers that exclude, should be replaced with frontiers, lands of mobile and flexible exchange, in order to build identities that can accept and dialogue with cultural diversities.

Kai Wiedenhöfer has a masters in photography and editorial design at the Folkwang School of Essen and studied Arabic in Damascus, Syria. Since 1989, the focus of his work has mainly been the Middle East. He has received numerous awards, including Leica Medal of Excellence, World Press Photo Awards, Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography and, recently, the Carmignac Gestion Photojournalism Award.

The exhibition is along the River Adda, starting from Via dell’Isola.

Uganda – land of hope

In northern Uganda, two million people had to abandon their homes due to the civil war spearheaded by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Thousands of children were abused, turned into slaves, and enrolled as soldiers. Ever since the LRA was driven out, evacuees have started to return to their villages, with the dream of starting a new life. Five humanitarian organisations working in Uganda, a competition, a group of Europeans. These are the ingredients of Uganda – Land of hope, an exhibition which is included in the Food Right Now campaign supported by the European Commission, whose objective is to create awareness among the people on the issues of the right to food, nutrition safety, and equal access to resources.

Amnesty International asked the photographers of Prospekt to develop a project on the theme of water, an issue which already dominates today, and will dominate more and more in the near and coming future, any reflection and analysis on the destiny of the planet Earth, whether they are environmental, economic, social, political or media related. Samuele Pellecchia in Laos crossed the land of Nakai Plateau where an Italian-Thai-Laos joint-venture, with the backing of the World Bank, began constructing the huge Nam Theun 2 dam. Ivo Saglietti went to the region of the Niger delta where Shell, Elf, Chevron, Agip, and other large oil companies have been extracting oil for decades, exploiting and polluting the water and soil of the region. Massimo di Nonno went from the south to the north of Sicily where, every year, there is a serious hydric emergency every summer, despite the fact that the island has abundant amounts of water, ascertaining the state of abandonment of the public aqueducts and the mistreatment of water by the colluding public powers.
